Dr John * Wolfaardt

Dr John * Wolfaardt

Dr. Johan Wolfaardt is a Professor Emeritus in the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery of the University of Alberta and a Co-founder and past member of the Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM). 

His clinical and research interests have been in the area of Maxillofacial Prosthodontics with particular emphasis in the area of head and neck reconstruction, osseointegration and advanced digital technologies in surgical design and simulation. He has published over 110 papers in refereed journals and contributed to a variety of texts. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on maxillofacial prosthodontic care, head and neck reconstruction, osseointegration, and advanced digital technology as well as serving on the boards of many associated International Societies during his career.

Dr. Wolfaardt has a special interest in quality management and he initiated the interest and process that led to registering an ISO9000 quality system for the clinical and research aspects of osseointegration care.  

Dr Rupert Austin

Dr Rupert Austin

Rupert was appointed a Clinical Lecturer and Hon. Consultant in Prosthodontics at King's College London Dental Institute in 2017, having completed his PhD in 2011 and an NIHR Academic ClinicalLectureship in 2015. He is currently Service Lead for Digital Dentistry at Guy's and St. Thomas Dental Directorate as well as working part time in Private Practice. He has an active research portfolio including supervising PhD and MSc projects into tooth wear and digital dentistry and regularly publishes research in peer-reviewed scientific journals. 

Dr Raj Dubal

Dr Raj Dubal

Raj qualified from Bart's and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2001, and completed his mono-specialty training in Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics at Bart's and The London in 2008. Following a number of years as an Associate Specialist in Prosthodontics at Bart's and The London and in private practice he embarked on specialty training in Restorative Dentistry at St George's and King's Dental Hospitals in London and completed his training in November 2018. He has recently been appointed as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at The Royal London Dental Hospital, and Bart's and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

He is on the GDC specialist lists in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics.

He has a keen interest in the management of head and neck cancer patients as well as the rehabilitation of patients with complex acquired dento-alveolar and oral defects. He has a strong commitment to education delivery and is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh.

Dr Sarra Jawad

Dr Sarra Jawad

Sarra Jawad is a newly appointed Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

She qualified as a dentist in 2004 from King’s College London, having intercalated a BSc in Basic Dental Sciences with Physiology in 2001.  She has a varied clinical background, having worked in Community Dentistry, General Practice and the Hospital Services.

Sarra carried out her Specialty Training at the University of Manchester Dental Hospital, and during this time embarked upon a research study comparing mini dental implants to conventional implants as abutments for complete mandibular overdentures.  This study secured a £250,000 NIHR Research for Patient Benefit Grant, and forms the backbone of her PhD studies, which are due to be completed this year.

Her dental interests include multidisciplinary oral rehabilitation of patients (with and without dental implants), especially those with Cleft Lip and Palate, Head and Neck Oncology and Hypodontia.  In addition to her clinical commitments, Sarra is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, a reviewer for the Journal of Prosthodontics, and regularly lectures for Health Education England on a variety of Restorative topics.

Dr Kate le Maréchal

Dr Kate le Maréchal

Dr Kate le Maréchal is Lead Clinical Psychologist within the South Thames Cleft Service, a role she has held since 2009.  She has a wealth of experience as a Clinical psychologist in including work within child and adolescent mental health services; forensic mental health; autism and related disorders and with the orofacial pain team at King’s College Dental Institute.

As a result of her varied experience in both generic andspecialist services, Dr le Maréchal has developed a broad knowledge base of the psychological difficulties in all age groups and is able to employ a wide range of therapeutic models to suit the needs of the individual and/or their family.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr le Maréchal plays a key role within the National Cleft Clinical Psychology Clinical Excellence Network, is the Clinical Psychology representative on the Cleft Development Group and was the British Psychological Society representative on the Cleft Clinical Reference Group. She is a past President of the Craniofacial Society of Great Britain and Ireland.

Dr Lochana Nanayakkara

Dr Lochana Nanayakkara

Lochana Nanayakkara qualified in Dentistry in 1992. After working as a House Officer in Conservative dentistry, Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and in General Practice, she gained a Fellowship in Dental Surgery before undertaking a 2 year Masters Degree. She went on to pass the intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship examination after completing a 5 year Specialist Training Program in Restorative Dentistry.

In 2003, Lochana was appointed as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. She is the Training Program Director (TPD) for Dental Core Training in North East London and TPD for Restorative Specialty Training for London and KSS. She was a Specialty Advisor in Restorative Dentistry to the Royal College Surgeons of England and in 2018, she was appointed as the Deputy DME for Dentistry for BartsHealth NHS Trust.

Alongside her role as a Consultant, she is also the Clinical Lead for patients with complicated Medical Histories including Haemophilia and is the President-Elect of the Dental Committee of the World Federation of Haemophilia.

Dr Paul Palmer

Dr Paul Palmer

Dr Paul Palmer works in private practice limited to periodontology and implant dentistry, and is a Consultant in Periodontology with a special interest in Implant Dentistry at Guy’s Dental Hospital, where he is an associate specialist teacher at King’s College London Dental Institute, teaching trainees in Periodontology, Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry.

He has a special interest in bone grafting and sinus elevation techniques as well as using other treatment modalities as alternatives to grafting. He has worked with several different implant systems since 1987 and lectured Nationally and Internationally on the subject. He is co-author of two textbooks on implant dentistry as well as many research publications within the field of implant dentistry.  

Dr Shanon Patel

Dr Shanon Patel

Dr Shanon Patel divides his time between multi-disciplinary specialist practice in central London working as a Consultant in at Guys Dental Hospital, training Specialist Endodontists at King’s College London Dental Institute. His PhD thesis assessed the use of CBCT in the management of Endodontic problems. He is actively involved in research and has co-supervised 45 Masters and PhD students. He has published over 80 papers in peer reviewed journals and 3 National and European guidelines in dental imaging. He has also co-authored 4 textbooks which have been translated into 5 different languages.

Ms Ginette Phippen

Ms Ginette Phippen

Ginette studied Clinical Language Sciences in Leeds and qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 1989. She gained a Doctorate in Clinical Practice from the University of Southampton in 2013 and has a postgraduate qualification in cleft palate speech. Ginette has worked as a speech and language therapist for nearly 30 years in a range of roles and settings, primarily within the NHS. Her current role is Regional Lead SLT for The Spires Cleft Centre, Oxford and Salisbury. Ginette also took on the Clinical Director role for the twin-site service in 2017.

She is a member of the national forum for Lead SLTs in cleft, which oversees service delivery for specialist cleft SLTs.  This group led the development of a national service specification for speech therapy in cleft care as well as implementation of national speech outcome standards.

In 2014 Ginette she contributed a chapter to and edited a textbook, ‘Speech Therapy in Cleft Palate and Velopharyngeal Dysfunction’, written with The Spires SLT team. She is principal investigator for several research studies at Spires including Timing of Primary Surgery (TOPS) trial and the Cleft Collective Cohort studies.  Clinically, her interests include speech prosthetics and the use of instrumentation in speech therapy.

Dr Sandip Popat

Dr Sandip Popat

Dr Sandip Popat is Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. His main remit within the Hospital is to treat patients with cleft lip and palate, oral cancer, trauma and hypodontia.

Sandip has been involved in treating patients with cleft lip and palate for over twenty years and set up the Cleft Clinical Excellence Network, of which he is currently the chair.

He is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Regional Specialty advisor for Restorative Dentistry in his region and has undertaken Medico-legal work for many years. He worked in general dental practice for seven years before entering specialist training.

Dr Jose Rodriguez

Dr Jose Rodriguez

Jose is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Trust and a Specialist in Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry.

He qualified as a dentist from the Universidad Santa Maria in Venezuela in 2000. He was appointed as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Trust in 2018. His clinical interests include multi disciplinary management of complex clinical cases, removable prosthodontics, tooth wear and dental implants.

Since graduating Jose has completed a doctorate measuring the progression of tooth wear over 3 years. He has published in excess of 20 peer reviewed papers, has held various academic positions in London, is an active undergraduate and postgraduate examiner, peer and grant reviewer, has lectured nationally and internationally, and has held various positions in dental committees.

Jose is actively involved in teaching and mentoring, has co-developed endodontic skills courses for general dental practitioners, and is actively involved in clinical research. In his spare time Jose enjoys going to concerts, reading and keeping fit.

Dr Roberto Rotundo

Dr Roberto Rotundo

Dr Roberto Rotundo is Honorary Lecturer and Locum Consultant in Periodontology at the  Eastman Dental Institute. He has authored more than 100 publications and participated as speaker in several national and international conferences.

He was fellow researcher and adjunct professor in Periodontology at University of Siena and University of Florence (Italy) from 1998 to 2016. Winner of several research prizes by Swiss Society of Periodontology, Italian Society of Periodontology, European Federation of Periodontology-Jaccard Prize. He is an Active Member of the Italian Society of Periodontology (SIdP).
