What is revalidation?

Revalidation for dentist article was published by the GDC in 2010 and they are hoping to introduce it into the profession from 2014.

This is a mechanism which currently only applies to doctors in the UK.  It is used to prove the skills of practicing clinicians are up-to-date and they remain fit to practice medicine.

It can be used to reassure patients, employers and other professionals, and may contribute to improving patient care and safety.

Doctors will undergo revalidation every five years but will be required to have annual appraisal. This annual appraisal will be in the form of portfolio with evidence showing how they meet relevant standards. These are carried out by a local 'Responsible Officer'.

The Responsible Officer will usually be a senior doctor in the healthcare organization which employs the doctor, such as the medical director. The Responsible Officer's recommendation at the 5yr revalidation review will usually be based on the doctor's annual history.

Alasdair Miller recently wrote an article in Dent Update 2012; 39: 610–612, looking at revalidation in Primary Care.  It breaks down the background of where the concepts of revalidation originates.  As dentists work in a different environment from most doctors this is the new challenge the GDC has to make revalidation to work. In secondary care settings this process is likely to be similar to hospital based doctors.
